George Soros is Back and Progressives Should Take Heart
The United States political machine saw a wake up call that few would ever have guessed could come. In 2016 we saw Donald Trump, reality star and flailing business mogul, turn into the Republican Nominee for President and ultimately the President of the United States. After a contentious and poorly planned campaign, President Trump took the White House in order to seize upon his base by using violent rhetoric and damaging policy generation. With Trump in the White House many progressives were understandably upset, but one was ready to fight back and his name is George Soros. Read more at Politico about George Soros.
George Soros is one of the world’s leading hedge fund investors as well as one of the most giving philanthropists of all time. Through the Open Society Foundations, Soros’ charity arm, he has given nearly $12 billion in total to places all around the globe in order to fight for equality, social justice, democracy, and core Western values. Soros is a noted progressive who has done more with his position that most of the highest ranking politicians will ever even attempt. Soros is also one of the most important foils to the upcoming Trump presidency.
George Soros and Donald Trump have no love lost between each other because they stand on diametrically opposite ends of the spectrum. Soros was so emboldened to return to politics that he jumped back into the 2016 campaign race by spending close to $25 million in campaign contributions to Democrats and progressives down the ticket. This isn’t his first foray into politics and many people will probably remember Mr. Soros from his support of Al Gore during Gore’s presidential run against George H.W. Bush. Since that time Soros has stayed mostly out of the political spotlight, but the stakes were simply too high to sit idly by while President Trump ran a campaign on destroying the fundamental values of the United States of America.
George Soros is more than just a progressive power house at the highest level of government action, he is also a fundamental proponent of grassroots activism. George Soros believes in people staying involved in politics to the point that they take to the streets and march and protest for what is right. That is in large part the goal of the Open Society Foundations: to put money into the right grassroots activists so that people are never beholden to their government when their government is behaving tyrannical.
A great example of grassroots activism emboldened by funding from the Open Society Foundations is the Ferguson Protests of just a few years ago. People in Ferguson, MO took to the streets to protest the shooting death of an unarmed black man named Michael Brown. The resulting conversation focused on social justice and inequality regarding police brutality. Visit this site to know more at opensocietyfoundations.org.
